Easy Buttermilk Drop Biscuits

These quick and easy drop biscuits come together with just a few pantry ingredients. Simply whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt, then add buttermilk and melted butter to form a dough. Scoop onto a baking sheet, brush with egg wash for a golden top, and bake until perfectly golden and fluffy. Serve these warm with butter, honey, or your favorite jam for a comforting, homemade treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1 cup cold buttermilk

  • 8 tablespoons melted butter (1 stick)

  • Egg, beaten (optional)

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 450°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt.
  • Pour in the buttermilk and melted butter and stir until a dough forms. Once the dough comes together, give it a few more stirs to help the gluten develop a bit.
  • Using an ice cream scoop, drop mounds of the dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  • Combine the egg with 1 tablespoon of water and whisk. Gently brush the tops of the biscuits.
  • Bake the biscuits 11 to 13 minutes, until the tops are golden brown and the center is set.
  • Remove the biscuits from the oven and enjoy the biscuits warm with your favorite toppings, such as your favorite jam, butter, or honey.

Notes

  • To make the biscuits more interesting, add herbs or sharp cheddar cheese, or both!
