There’s something magical about how family traditions evolve over time, taking on new forms while preserving their spirit. In our family, what began as a moment of prayer before holiday meals has beautifully transformed into a cherished poetic tradition that brings us together in a special way.
Each year, one family member is given the honor of selecting or crafting the words that will bless our dinner. They can choose between finding an existing poem that speaks to their heart or creating something entirely new. This freedom has led to a variety of expressions over the years–from classic holiday verses to personal writings that reflect our family’s journey.
This year, it was my turn to carry on the tradition. I chose to write an original piece that could serve both as a poem and a toast, weaving together the natural beauty of winter, the warmth of our gathering, and our hopes for the future. Here it is:
A Winter’s Toast
As soft snow dances and twirls above,
Transforming day to night with nature’s love,
Each flake a precious work of winter’s art,
Brings magic to warm every heart.
By the fireside our wishes take flight,
While pine and cinnamon bring delight,
In the depths of darkness we find tradition’s light,
As memories bloom in winter’s sacred night.
So raise your glass to seasons yet untold,
To spring’s sweet promise breaking winter’s hold,
For in the pause between the dark and light,
We toast to hope that makes our futures bright.
What I love most about this tradition is how it creates a moment of reflection before we dive into our meal. Whether through found verses or original creations, each year brings a new perspective to our holiday table, while maintaining that sacred pause we’ve always valued. It’s proof that traditions don’t have to remain static to retain their meaning—sometimes they grow more beautiful as they evolve.
Does your family have a tradition that has evolved over the years? Or do you have a special way of beginning your holiday meals? I’d love to hear how other families create these moments of pause and connection during the busy holiday season.
