Readers often ask about the inspiration behind my stories. Sometimes it’s a place. Sometimes it’s a character who appears out of nowhere. And sometimes, it’s a song. The song that inspired Summer in the Moon Garden was LANCO’s “Greatest Love Story,” and its themes of second chances and finding your way back to love helped shape Danny and Kat’s story.

What struck me wasn’t just the romance. It was the idea behind it—and that idea wasn’t new. We’ve all heard it so often it’s become a cliché: getting back together with your high school sweetheart.
Two people who once cared deeply for each other reconnect years later, after life has taken them in different directions. They’ve made mistakes, weathered heartbreak, and grown into different versions of themselves. Yet when they meet again, there’s still a spark—a sense that maybe the story isn’t over after all.
That idea has always fascinated me, and clearly I’m not alone, since it’s a trope that shows up again and again in movies and fiction.
So why are we so drawn to second-chance stories?
Maybe it’s because most of us have our own “what ifs.” The road not taken. The friendship that faded. The dream we set aside while life demanded our attention. We wonder how things might have turned out if we’d chosen differently.
But I don’t think second chances are really about going backward. They’re about moving forward with the wisdom we didn’t have the first time around.
That became the heart of Summer in the Moon Garden.

How the Song Shaped Danny and Kat’s Story
When readers meet Kat Bauer, she’s standing at a crossroads. Her twenty-year marriage is ending, her twin sons are spending the summer in Alaska before returning to college, and the future she once imagined no longer exists. Returning to her small hometown of Criss Creek feels less like a fresh start and more like picking up the pieces.
Then she reconnects with Danny—the boy who once held her heart.
Like the song that inspired them, Kat and Danny aren’t the same people they were years ago. They’ve lived through disappointments, loss, and unexpected detours. The question isn’t whether they still care about each other. The question is whether they’re willing to risk opening their hearts again.
That’s what I love most about second-chance love stories. They’re not built on youthful optimism alone. They’re built on resilience—on choosing hope after life has shown you how fragile happiness can be.
And isn’t that true for all of us?
It’s Never Too Late for a New Beginning
The older I get, the more I believe life rarely follows the script we write for it. Plans change. Relationships evolve. Doors close. But sometimes the unexpected turns lead us somewhere even better than we imagined.
Maybe that’s why stories about second chances continue to resonate so deeply. They remind us that life isn’t a single act with a final curtain call. There’s always another chapter waiting to be written.
And sometimes the greatest love story is the one that gets a second chance.
